Outer Limits - Sculptures in Art Alley

Sawyer Yards is proud to be a participating venue of Sculpture Month Houston 2018.

The public is invited to Art Alley at Sawyer Yards to view Outer Limits. Houston artists, Meredith 'Butch' Jack, Jack Gron, Tommy Gregory, and Alexander Squier will have sculptures on view until fall of 2019.

Jack’s pieces, Snake Woman 1 and Predatory Behavior, reference the relationship man has to animal. Snake Woman 1, is a talisman of snake protection. Predatory Behavior pays reverence to the sophistication of the raptors wing manipulation and control of effortless flight.

Gron’s piece represents a series of ongoing thematic work spanning the past 20 years. The Visitation series centers on the UFO phenomenon in popular culture especially amongst US Baby Boomers. With a keen interest in current events and the world in which he lives, Gron’s sculptural compositions have become statements of his personal beliefs.

In the tradition of outdoor statue or sculpture, the pedestal is a foundation to ground the work or elevate it. Our country is in a young stage historically when it comes to public art, the foundational moment if you will. In Gregory’s piece, the viewer is allowed to interpret their definition of sculpture upon this platform, iSculpture is a piece that takes into consideration the past, present and future.

In Squier’s Temple to the Origin is a tribute to a brick recovered from the remains of a demolished Houston bridge. Other bricks salvaged from the old bridge, still in good shape, have continued their working lives; they have been reincorporated into the walkways of Sawyer Yards. Temple to the Original treats this misshapen old brick as venerable rather than disposable, using it as a master copy for production of a new generation made in its own image.

All exhibitions are free and open to the public Monday - Saturday 9 AM - 5 PM.

Central parking is free and located at 2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007.
